Thank you for supporting our 3rd grade!

crowded seed sale

Seed shoppers crowded the lobby when the sale opened at 9 a.m.

Thanks for coming to Belvedere to buy seeds! We had an extremely successful sale with a terrific turnout, selling out of all everything except acorn squash and pumpkin. We enjoyed talking to everyone who came into visit and have noted your request for EVEN MORE SEEDS next year!

seed sale photoWe packaged the pumpkin seeds so long ago that we forgot about them. They weren’t included in our advertising, and didn’t make it out to the tables until an hour or so into the sale.  We’ll be offering them for 75 cents an envelopes in the cafeteria from 11-2 on Friday.

The Seed Sale, which also included selling honey graham crackers to raise awareness about honeybees, raised almost $600 for our school. Students will discuss opportunity costs this week, then vote on how they want to spend the proceeds. Some of the suggestions so far are to buy more plants (including blackberries, tomatoes and herbs), books for the library, native bee houses, and small soccer goals for the blacktop.

Students know that they need to reinvest in the business, too, so also are discussing buying heirloom seeds (whose plants we can harvest seeds from) and self-sealing seed envelopes. Last year’s funds purchased a weed whacker, red wiggler worms for worm composting and science investigations, seeds, seed packets and a 100x-magnification microscope.

Thank you again to Gary Coene, Gamine Prinz, Terri Lamb, the Fairfax Master Naturalists and other Belvedere families for your seed donations; to Erica Wohlleben and Plant NoVA Natives for joining us for the day, and to Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. for donating seed catalogs that we could give for free.
