Green Team never rests

Green Team members cover the tree nursery to protect seedlings in cold weather.

Green Team has been quiet so far this year, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t been busy. So far they’ve measured and recorded data about seedlings in the tree nursery, planted tree seeds, cleaned up garden beds, met with a representative from Grounds, and learned about native and invasive plant species.

This week team members met with the Staff Eco-committee to explain their plans for a school-wide project: working with all grade levels to grow vegetables to donate to Food for Others. Belvedere already donates unopened food and drink from the cafeteria every week to the non-profit organization, which provides food to 1,000 families a year, according to Food for Others volunteer coordinator Nikki Clifford. She recently spoke to the fifth grade about the organization’s work, and Green Team members were invited to sit in on the session.

Green Team plans to kick off the project in the next couple of weeks, visiting classrooms to invite students to participate and then handing out seeds, soil and starter pots that classes can grow on their windowsills or trailer rails.
