Belvedere wins Keep Virginia Beautiful grant; fifth-graders to paint rain barrel for county display

A Chinese mantid checks out a chestnut oak seedling in the Belvedere tree nursery.

The leaves might be turning red and yellow, but at Belvedere we’re still green, green, green. It’s only the third week of school and we already have several environmental education highlights:
• A sketch by Ms. Dillane’s fifth-grade class has been accepted by the county’s Artistic Rain Barrel program. Given the green light, the class next will paint the barrel, which will be on display in the county later this year. Stay tuned for more details.
• In its “30 Grants in 30 Days” program, Keep Virginia Beautiful awarded its first 2014 grant to Belvedere. The money will be used to expand our recycling to outdoor spaces and to create signs that encourage recycling and litter clean-up on the field.
• Eagle Scout candidate and Stuart HS senior Evan Kean is finishing up two sheds he and his team built earlier this month. The sheds will house instructional materials like field guides and magnifying glasses for outdoor learning.
• The trout tank is set up and waiting for eggs in Ms. Gump’s K-1 classroom. Thank you to everyone who helped make the tank possible! We’ll be sending you photos and a personal thank-you soon.

As usual, there are volunteer opportunities:
If you are an Eagle Scout candidate, a Girl Scout, or a student seeking community service hours, please contact me at severs@fcps.edu. Projects I need help with now include:
• Painting sheds
• Hanging painted tires as planters
• Weeding and mulching
• Assembling a third composter
• Re-creating our log circle in the park
• Building a giant storyteller chair
• Serving on the parent Eco-Committee
