Can you help us raise trout next year?

It’s true! We’re joining Trout Unlimited’s Trout in the Classroom program to better connect students to our local watershed. The curriculum calls for life cycle studies in the fall, but we’d like to stop finding homes for super-reproductive guppies and unsuccessfully raising tadpoles in the winter.  Raising trout for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries fits the school schedule perfectly.

We receive the eggs in September, raise them to fry and then fingerlings, and then turn them over to DGIF to release the fingerlings below the Lake Barcroft Dam in early spring. We’re hoping that some of the students will be able to participate in the release, too!

Along the way, in addition to learning about animal life cycles, the students will monitor water quality, study stream habitats, and learn more about ecosystem connectivity. These are subjects that apply to students at all grade levels.

The only hitch is that we need to raise $1500 as soon as possible to cover start-up and early ongoing costs (and maybe a bus to the dam!). Any amount helps. Please send your tax-deductible contribution to the Belvedere PTA c/0 the school at 6540 Columbia Pike, Falls Church, VA 22041. You will receive a receipt. A donation form is below.
