Tomorrow’s SACC is for the birds

SACC bird houses

SACC students created these bird houses and feeders in anticipation of the Great Backyard Bird Count.

SACC students will be joining people all over the world by participating in the Great Backyard Bird Count. Audubon, Cornell’s Bird Lab and Bird Studies Canada co-sponsor the annual online citizen-science project to collect data about wild birds. Last year, people from more than 111 countries counted almost 33.5 million birds on 138,000 checklists. They recorded more than one-third of the world’s bird species!

It’s not too late for you to participate as well. Register online, then spend at least 15 minutes today or tomorrow tallying the numbers and kinds of birds you see in your backyard, a local park, at Belvedere — anywhere in the world. (You also can register to participate with Belvedere’s SACC.)

Need help identifying birds? Whatbird.com and National Geographic have simple online keys that ask you questions about a bird you saw, such as its color, to narrow down what species it was. Or click here to see photos of common backyard birds in our area.
