There are two tiny caterpillars, the first of five “instars” or phases that the caterpillar will go through as it grows. The second grade is studying these monarch larvae, hoping they’ll spin their chrysalides and become butterflies. You’ve probably seen the adults – they are orange and black. The orange lets predators know that they aren’t good to eat; the milkweed has a toxin in it that the caterpillars incorporate when they eat the leaves.
